DRAGONFLY FARMS
Where the Highlands meet the Foothills
Meet the Dragonfly Farm “Residents”
Welcome to our Highland Cow page — home to the lovable, shaggy legends known as "Heilan Coos"! With their long hair, big personalities, and gentle nature, it's easy to see why these iconic Scottish cattle have won hearts around the world (even Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth were fans!). Originally from the rugged Highlands of Scotland, these hardy coos thrive in all kinds of climates, from snowy Alaska to sunny Florida.
They're low-maintenance, eco-friendly grazers, and their lean, flavorful beef is some of the best around.
In the first section of this page, we invite you to get to know each member of our Highland fold — complete with photos and bios that highlight their unique personalities and traits. From playful calves to wise matriarchs, each coo has a story to tell.
The second section focuses on our Highland cows and calves available for sale. If we don't currently have any animals available, you'll find detailed information on our breeding practices, expected calving timelines, and how you can plan to welcome a Heilan Coo of your own in the near future. Whether you're a seasoned cattle owner or simply enchanted by these shaggy beauties, we're excited to share our passion with you.
Fiona
Meet Fiona
The Queen of the Pasture (and Our Hearts)
Fiona was our very first Highland cow, and she'll always have a special place in our hearts. Born in April 2023, she came to us in June 2024 from a farm in South Georgia-though her roots trace back to Missouri. While she isn't AHCA registered, Fiona more than makes up for it with her unique charm, playful spirit, and big personality.
This beautiful dun Highland is impossible to miss, with her signature "cowlick" whorl right in the middle of her dossan and her head held high like she owns the place-which, honestly, she kind of does. She started out as the runt of the herd, often trailing behind a bonded pair of older Belted Galloways. But once they moved on and the three younger "littles" arrived, Fiona stepped confidently into her role as the boss lady of the pasture.
Despite her sass and occasional "big sister" attitude (especially when treats are involved-she's very food motivated), Fiona is incredibly sweet. She adores her "momma," loves being brushed, and melts for chin and neck scratches. She can often be found lounging in the pond for hours, living her best life.
And the best news? Fiona is expecting her very first calf in February or March of 2026! We can't wait to see her become a mom—she's already got the confidence, sass, and heart to be an amazing one.
The Littles
Meet "The Littles"
Our Highland Trio of Mischief, Charm, and Scottish Names In November 2024, our herd got a whole lot cuter with the arrival of our three youngest Highlands affectionately known around here as The Littles.
We purchased them earlier that year in April through an auction hosted by Webb Cattle Co., but had to patiently wait until they were old enough to leave their mamas and make the trip home. They arrived late one night, around 10 p.m., and spent their first few days settling in safely in the barn and corral.
From the moment they arrived, these three acted like lifelong siblings— even though they aren't related. They've been inseparable ever since, earning them the nickname The Three Musketeers. They explore, nap, graze, and get into shenanigans together.
Fiona, our first Highland, kept a watchful (and sometimes skeptical) eye on them during their first days, and while she plays the aloof big sister at times, she always keeps them within sight.
Each of these little ones carries a traditional Scottish name, chosen for its meaning and pronounceability-because let's be honest, some of those gorgeous Gaelic names are harder to wrangle than a spirited calf!
Keep scrolling to meet each one of The Littles and learn what makes them so special.
Skye
Meet Skye (Miss Eclipse)
Smart, Sweet, and Full of Quiet Confidence
Skye, officially registered as Miss Eclipse, was born in April 2024 at Bullrush Acres in Manitoba, Canada—right around the time of the solar eclipse that inspired her name. While we call her Skye, her official name stays with her for registration. She's a stunning yellow Highland, one of the lovely official coat colors in the breed.
Among The Littles, Skye is the confident leader of the trio—but she knows her place in the bigger herd dynamic, falling in just behind Fiona. Of the three young ones, she seems to have the closest bond with Fiona. She'll stand her ground when needed, but she also knows to respect Fiona's seasoned horns and boss-lady energy. As the younger girls' horns grow in, we expect the pecking order might get a little more interesting!
When Skye first arrived, she was the most reserved of the group-always the first to take a step back from human interaction. But now? She's the most curious and interactive of the three. Shell happily accept chin, cheek, and neck scratches, enjoys being brushed, and is never far behind if she thinks treats are involved. She's smart-picking up routines and expectations quickly—and has zero hesitation about following her favorite human anywhere, including into off-limits areas like the feed room (note to self: close that door!).
We're working on boundaries and building respectful routines with her, especially around treat time. Skye is learning quickly and showing just how intelligent and responsive Highlands can be. She has a sweet, steady energy, a quiet confidence, and a natural presence that sets her apart.
Sheena
Meet Sheena
Sweet, Sassy, and the Littlest Love
Sheena is the baby of the bunch-and she knows how to work it! Born in April 2024 at Little Lucky Cattle Co. near Rapid City, South Dakota, Sheena joined our herd as the smallest (and possibly cutest) of The Littles. While she isn't AHCA eligible, she carries all the Highland charm, officially labeled yellow in coat color, though her reddish hue makes her stand out with a warm, rich glow.
Sheena may be the littlest, but don't let her size fool you-she's got plenty of spunk and spirit. She happily takes her place at the bottom of the herd ranking, deferring to Skye and Kenna, but that doesn't stop her from scooting her way into the action when it's treat or feeding time. Skye and Kenna rarely push her around— in fact, they tend to accept her as the quirky little sister of their tight-knit trio. Fiona, on the other hand, will sometimes remind her who's boss when food is involved, but Sheena always bounces back with that trademark sass.
When it comes to people, Sheena is still a bit more cautious than her sisters-slightly skittish with human-initiated attention—but she's also the boldest in other ways. She was the very first to venture out into the pasture when the gate opened, and she'll often break ranks to race toward the barn at feeding time. She loves to be underfoot, following close as I walk to the trough with the feed bucket, full of energy and enthusiasm.
And honestly... she's just so stinkin' cute. It's impossible not to smile when Sheena's around —she may be the smallest, but she brings a whole lot of heart to the pasture.
Kenna
Meet Kenna
Curious, Cheerful, and Always Ready to Supervise
Kenna was born in April 2024 at Bullrush Acres in Manitoba, Canada, just like her pasture mate Skye. Though she isn't eligible for AHCA registration, she's every bit the classic Highland beauty, officially considered a yellow— though her coat often looks more reddish with sun-kissed blonde highlights and soft curls along her belly.
Kenna fits her role perfectly as the "middle child" of The Littles. In their little trio hierarchy, she stands comfortably between Skye and Sheena. She has a sweet blend of shy and friendly-she was actually the first of the three to let me pet her, but she's taken her time when it comes to warming up to more interaction.
That said, treats are a game-changer. Kenna will follow me closely when she knows I've got snacks and gets adorably animated at feeding time-doing a little jumpy dance of excitement as I head toward the trough.
She's inquisitive by nature and has a cheerful, easygoing energy that's just plain fun to be around. Kenna is always in the know.
Whether we're working in the barn or doing something new in the corral, she's usually the first to show up, ears perked, ready to "supervise" with her signature nosy charm. She may not always want the spotlight, but she's never far from the action— and always adds a little joy wherever she goes.

Breeding with Care
We breed with a deep respect for the Highland breed standard and a commitment to healthy, thriving calves. Our breeding practices avoid pairing carriers of chondrodysplasia (commonly known as dwarfism) by genetic testing and carefully selected matings. Sound conformation, maternal instinct, and calving ease are top priorities in our herd.
Color Genetics in Highlands
Highlands come in a stunning range of colors—red, yellow, dun, silver, white, brindle, and black. Calf color is determined by the genes passed down from both parents. For example, red is dominant, while dun and silver are recessive. Breeding for a specific color requires an understanding of genetic pairings and sometimes a bit of luck!
Other Fun Facts
Highland cows are known for their long lifespans and can calve into their late teens.
Their thick double coat means they thrive in cold climates without needing as much feed to stay warm.
Horns are present in both males and females and can vary in shape depending on sex and lineage.
